Hiab Training

Hiab training is essential for drivers who operate lorry-mounted cranes used to load and unload heavy goods. These cranes are common in construction, utilities and logistics, where safe handling of equipment and materials is a daily requirement. Our courses prepare drivers to use Hiab vehicles safely and to meet industry accreditation standards.

What is Hiab Training?

A Hiab is a brand name widely used to describe lorry-mounted hydraulic cranes. Training is required for anyone who intends to operate this equipment as part of their role. In practice, a Hiab licence proves that the driver can set up the crane correctly, carry out lifting operations and follow health and safety regulations.

There are several types of Hiab training depending on the attachments used, including:

  • Hook – for lifting general loads
  • Brick Grab – for construction materials
  • Remote Control – for off-vehicle operation

Hiab Training Requirements

To enrol in Hiab training, drivers must already hold a valid HGV licence, such as a Cat C licence or C1 licence. Learners should also be medically fit and confident in handling large vehicles. While no theory test is required, training includes both classroom and practical elements to ensure a full understanding of the equipment.

The Training Process

Courses typically last between one and three days, depending on prior experience. During training, learners cover both theoretical and practical elements, including:

  • Setting up and checking equipment
  • Operating different Hiab attachments
  • Safe loading and unloading procedures
  • Risk assessments and site safety
  • Practical lifting exercises under supervision

At the end of the course, drivers complete an assessment. Successful candidates receive certification through ALLMI or NPORS, which is recognised across the transport and construction sectors.

Career Opportunities with Hiab Training

Holding a Hiab licence creates opportunities across several industries. For example, certified drivers are employed in:

  • Building and construction supply delivery
  • Utilities and infrastructure support
  • General haulage and logistics firms
  • Waste and recycling collection

As a result, many employers look for drivers with Hiab certification, as it reduces the need for separate site operators and increases workplace efficiency.

Renewal and Ongoing Requirements

Most Hiab certification cards remain valid for five years. After this period, drivers must complete a refresher course and re-assessment to maintain their qualification. Hiab training can also be combined with other courses, such as ADR training or Driver CPC, to improve employability.

01
Hiab Training

Hiab training is essential for drivers who operate lorry-mounted cranes used to load and unload heavy goods. These cranes are common in construction, utilities and logistics, where safe handling of equipment and materials is a daily requirement. Our courses prepare drivers to use Hiab vehicles safely and to meet industry accreditation standards.

02
C1 Licence Training

A C1 licence allows drivers to operate vehicles between 3,500kg and 7,500kg, such as ambulances, delivery trucks and removal vans. Training with HGV Learning covers both the theory and practical tests, ensuring you are ready to drive these vehicles safely and professionally.

03
C+E Licence Training

A C+E licence, also known as a Class 1 HGV licence, allows drivers to operate the largest and most complex commercial vehicles. This includes articulated lorries and other combinations where the trailer exceeds 750kg. It is the next step up from a Cat C licence and is essential for long-distance and international haulage roles.

04
Cat C Licence Training

A cat C licence allows an individual to drive medium-sized lorries, also known as rigid vehicles, with a maximum weight of around 32 tonnes.

This type of commercial driver’s licence is a requirement for operating vehicles that are commonly used for transporting goods and materials over medium distances.

05
ADR Licence Training

Drivers must hold an ADR licence to transport hazardous goods such as fuel, chemicals, gases and flammable liquids. Carrying these loads without the correct licence is illegal. As a result, ADR training with HGV Learning is essential for anyone entering this area of work.

Our courses prepare drivers to pass the official exams and to manage dangerous substances safely in real-world situations. In addition, training gives learners the confidence to deal with emergencies and meet all regulatory standards.

06
Telescopic Handler Training

A telescopic handler, often called a telehandler, is one of the most widely used machines in construction, agriculture and logistics. It combines the features of a forklift and a crane, making it versatile for lifting, moving and placing loads. Our telescopic handler training prepares learners to operate this equipment safely and to gain recognised certification for employment in these industries.
