If you passed your car driving test before 1 January 1997, you likely already hold automatic Category C1 entitlement on your licence. What a 7.5 Tonne Licence Actually Lets You Drive

C1 entitlement covers vehicles between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes maximum authorised mass, which in practice includes box vans, larger horseboxes, motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes, and smaller delivery lorries. It’s also relevant if your work involves road-registered dumper trucks or plant in that weight range.

Professional Use Comes With Extra Requirements

If you’re driving a C1 vehicle for work rather than personal use, Driver CPC requirements typically apply on top of your licence — 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years, which gov.uk confirms is a legal requirement for professional drivers, with fines of up to £1,000 for driving professionally without a valid one. Private, non-commercial use of a C1 vehicle has fewer restrictions, but check your specific situation if you’re unsure which applies to you.

Should You Go Straight for a Bigger Licence Instead?
