What Age Can You Start HGV Driver Training? A 2026 UK Guide to Licence Age Requirements

A DVLA CPC check is how you confirm your Driver Certificate of Professional Competence status and periodic training hours are up to date. It sounds like a small administrative task, but getting it wrong can mean you’re not legally allowed to drive professionally — so it’s worth understanding properly.
If you drive professionally, you need to complete 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years to keep your Driver CPC valid, on top of holding the correct vocational licence category. This is confirmed directly by gov.uk, which also states that driving professionally without a valid Driver CPC can result in fines of up to £1,000.
Driver CPC isn’t a one-off qualification — it’s an ongoing requirement that needs topping up with training hours every 5 years.
You can check your recorded periodic training hours directly through the DVSA’s own service. According to gov.uk, the process works like this:
Training providers report your completed hours to the DVSA, but mistakes happen — a course not logged correctly, or hours recorded against the wrong licence, can leave you short without realising until it’s too late. Checking periodically, rather than assuming everything’s been recorded, is the only way to catch a gap before it becomes a problem.
If you reach your 5-year deadline without the full 35 hours logged, your Driver CPC lapses and you’re no longer legally able to drive professionally until you’ve made up the shortfall. This is a genuine risk to your income, not just a paperwork inconvenience, so it’s worth checking your hours well before the deadline — not in the final few weeks when course availability may be limited.
If your check shows you’re behind, periodic training courses can usually be booked in blocks (often 7 hours at a time) to fit around your working schedule. If you’re newly qualified and haven’t started your Driver CPC clock yet, our guide to why drivers choose HGV Learning covers how we build CPC planning into training from the start, rather than leaving it as an afterthought.
Yes, checking your recorded hours through the official DVSA service is free — you only pay for the periodic training courses themselves if you need to top up your hours.
Registration itself is quick, but your password arrives by post, so allow a few days before you can log in and view your hours.
It applies to most drivers driving professionally for hire or reward. Some exemptions exist for specific vehicle uses, so check your exact situation if you’re unsure.
